Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has taken a swipe at former governor Akinwunmi Ambode for employing blackmail and harassment tactics against the lawmakers during his tenure.
According to the Speaker, this was done through hired hirelings.
He spoke Friday, 8 November, 2019, during the presentation by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of N1.169trillion Appropriation Bill for 2020. The Speaker said contrary to claims from “different quarters”, the legislature didn’t shirk from keeping its eye on the activities of the former governor during his time.
He alleged that Ambode, while in office, had hired hirelings to ‘blackmail and harass’ the legislature anytime he was queried on expenditure matters. “It is common knowledge that the last administration employed blackmailing and harassment to witch-hunt and deprive the House from performing its duties appropriately”, said Obasa.
Obasa recalled the House condemned the activities of Visionscape, the company employed by Ambode to pack refuse in the state. The House, then stopped payment to the firm through a motion when it was discovered it has no capacity to tackle the refuse problems of the state.
The Speaker further stated that, at the time, “one Olu Fajana, with his faceless group calling themselves the Legislative Probity and Accountability (LPA) led a protest to this House”. He claimed all the actions were aimed at stopping the legislature from effectively keeping a check on the former governor.
The Lagos legislature, Obasa said, “will never be deterred from doing its work”.
The Lagos Assembly recently invited Ambode to appear before it over his alleged extra-budgetary acquisition of buses while in office. Responding, the former governor filed a suit to stop his probe. The matter is currently subjudice while parties were asked to maintain status quo.
