3SC Go Top As Nigeria Premier League Starts

NPLThe Nigeria Premier League (NPL) started at last after several months of postponement.

The first match of the season was an Oriental Derby between CAF Champions’ League campaigners, Rangers International of Enugu and two time CAF champions, Enyimba of Aba at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu on Saturday. It ended 1-0 in favour of Rangers.

The other matches for Week 1 took place on Sunday with the biggest upset of the day coming in Owerri where newly promoted Nembe City of Yenogoa defeated Confederation Cup campaigners and Federation Cup holders, Heartland of Owerri right at their backyard, the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan went top of the league with their 2-0 thumping of Gombe United in the match played at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

Other results are: Akwa United defeated Dolphins 1-0 in Uyo; Sharks beat Warri Wolves 2-1 in Port Harcourt; Wikki Tourists lost 0-1 at home in Bauchi to defending champions, Kano Pillars; newly promoted Bayelsa United beat Confederations Cup campaigners, Lobi Stars of Makurdi 1-0; Sunshine Stars defeated Kaduna United 1-0 in Akure; while the match between two newly promoted teams: Nasarawa United and El Kanemi Warriors; and the Ilorin local derby between ABS and Kwara United ended goaless in Lafia and Ilorin respectively.

Week Two matches take place on Wednesday.
