The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Osun State has raised the alarm that the opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has concluded plans to massively rig the 2014 governorship election in the state.
The party alleged that the PDP was working with the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to create chaos before and after the election process, adding that the leadership of the NLC has been bought over by the PDP.
In a statement issued by the party’s Director of Publicity and Strategy, Barrister Kunle Oyatomi, the ACN said “authoritative
information leaked to the ACN from the meeting of PDP leaders in Osogbo over the weekend gave graphic details of how the plans to tamper with names on the voters’ list in each polling station; effect mass transfer of security force personnel from the state perceived to be sympathetic to ACN; and orchestrate a massive ballot box snatching exercise similar to what the party did in 2003 to rig Chief Bisi Akande out of office, while Labour would be mobilized to go on strike shortly before, and until the end of the election process.”
The statement reads “PDP is alleged to be planning to set aside huge sum of money to influence Labour to go on strike just before the election to sabotage the electoral process and create the chaos required to effect rigging.
“The grand design of this plan anchors on collaboration with criminal elements in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abuja headquarters, and the exercise of federal power over the Nigeria Police to destabilize the tight security network that has been put in place by the current state command of Nigeria Police in conjunction with the state government.”
Oyatomi also alleged that “The PDP leaders at the meeting were said to be unanimous in their belief that with the tight state of security in the state, it would be impossible to create the kind of mayhem the party would need to rig the 2014 election.”
According to him “the PDP has put in place mechanisms to ensure that Abuja displaces the current security arrangement in Osun state, just before the election, and get INEC to disorganize the voters’ list in each polling station to create maximum confusion and disenfranchise thousands of ACN supporters whose names would have been transferred
from their voting centres.”
The ACN spokesman also alleged that “a committee has been set up by the state chapter of the PDP in each ward to copy the list of names in the register of each polling station across the state for onward transmission to Abuja where a fake register would be compiled that would throw the whole process into confusion.”
