Following the unclear circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt by a female student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Osun State to kill her new born baby inside the toilet in her hostel, the authorities of the institution has set up an investigative panel to unravel circumstances surrounding the outrageous occurrence.
Separate investigations conducted by our correspondent revealed that the father of the new born baby, a 400 level student of Mechanical Engineering in the same institution and his parents have shown up at the hospital apparently to claim their child.
It was gathered that the female student identified as Oyin Rotimi who had been pregnant for about nine months gave birth to a baby inside the toilet of the popular Moremi Hall of the university and attempted to flush her new born baby into the water closet but she was caught by a cleaner who saw thick blood and then raised alarm.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju while speaking with The Gazellenews correspondent in the state yesterday confirmed incident. He said the female student and her baby are currently receiving treatment at the OAU health center.
The incident, which shocked many students, lecturers and other segment of people in the institution was said to have generated varied reactions as some students expressed shock over what would have prompted the student to commit such act.
It was further gathered that the young mother, who is in her late 20s is a student of Department of Agriculture. The Dean of Students’ Affairs in the university, Dr. (Mrs.) Lateefat Durosinmi and the security department have taken over the matter.
The PRO of the university cautioned that people should not draw conclusion that the student intentionally wanted to kill the new born baby.
According to him, “The cleaner that discovered the blood and subsequently caught the student in the toilet was being interrogated by the security department. We are on top of the situation and the new born baby and her mother are responding to treatment in our health facility. There is no cause for alarm”.
A release from the PRO reads: “Contrary to versions of story surrounding the incident of a childbirth which occurred at the Moremi Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Wednesday, 19th June, 2013, the visitation to the health centre early this morning and interaction with the mother of the baby by the Security Unit of the University, the Dean, Students’ Affairs and my good self (PRO), revealed that Diana Oyinlola was willing to have the baby and that there was no attempt whatsoever to conceal the pregnancy, talk less of aborting it and talk much less of wanting to flush the baby away through the water closet.
“The truth of the matter is that, there was a delivery of a baby boy by an inexperienced mother who, in her naivety, thought she was pressed by call of nature while she was actually in labour pains. Prior to the appearance of the baby, the young, inexperienced mother had discovered that she was bleeding and went to the toilet only to observe that something expelled into the water closet. It was at that juncture that she screamed and shouted for help when her friend (SATOPE Oluwayemisi Oladayo) heard her voice and traced her to the toilet from their room. It was when Satope entered the toilet and found the baby that she (Satope) called an elderly cleaner for assistance because the two of them were novice in childbearing.
“As at now, Diana Oyinlola’s parent was with her and she (Oyin) has started breast feeding her baby. Upon interaction, in the presence of matron, Mrs. M.G. Oyedele, Oyin stated that prior to the delivery, she was passing stool and had visited toilet several times but the last time she went around 7am, she could not describe how she was feeling.
“Thereafter, our Security Unit invited Satope for interrogation and confirmed the claim of Diana Oyinlola. Satope stated that Diana had to spend the night (18/06/2013) on campus to enable her prepare for her 8:00 am examination the next day because she stays off-campus. She stated that at mid-night, Oyin started complaining of stomach upset and was visiting toilet regularly. She claimed that at about few minutes to 7:00am, the roommates suggested that Oyin be taken to the University Health Center to enable her write the early morning examination in good health.
“It was around this time that Oyin went back to the toilet and that she (Satope) traced her to the toilet but later discovered that she had expelled what is now known as a baby in the toilet. She stated further that at the sight of the baby, she was stunned and called for help from the cleaner who later came and assisted in taking the baby from the WC to the Health Center.
“However, she stated that Oyinlola never intended to flush the baby but that she (Oyinlola) gave birth before her due date (EDD July) but was only ignorant of the tell tale signs of incoming baby, being the first experience”.
Meanwhile, the father of the new baby based, on volunteered statements, is a 400 level student of Mechanical Engineering, OAU, Ile-Ife”.
