Crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) showed no sign of being over as the party on Wednesday another state Governor, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto Sate for alleged anti-party.
The party had earlier suspended Wamakko’s Rivers State counterpart, Rotimi Amaechi allegedly for disobeying an organ of the party but which many adduced to Amaechi’s victory at the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) election where he was voted for a second term as chairman of the forum.
Amaechi’s victory was seen as a disgrace to President Goodluck Jonathan who wanted Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang to win the election.
Wamakko’s suspension is seen in man quarters as another attempt at weakening the Amaechi faction of the NGF as the Sokoto State Governor is one of the supporters of the Rivers State Governor.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling party, rising from its 338th meeting Wednesday evening, said it “extensively discussed the state of the party across the nation and its members as well as the repeated breaches and disregard to the party’s constitution by his Excellency, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Executive Governor of Sokoto State”.
According to the party, on several occasions, Wamakko ignored invitations and lawful directives of the NWC and has continued to show complete apathy to the affairs of the party and contempt to one of its organs.
A communiqué of the meeting, signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said “consequent upon the refusal of the Governor to honour yet another invitation by the NWC to appear before it today, Wednesday, June 5, 2013 without any reason, the Committee, in exercise of the powers conferred by Articles 57 (3), 57 (7), 58. 1(c ),(h), (f) and 59 (1),(2), hereby suspends the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, as a member of the party and refers the matter to the appropriate disciplinary committee of the party.”
“This is in furtherance of the determination of the leadership of the party to enforce discipline at all levels within the party”.
The party did not list the specific anti-party activities of the Sokoto State Governor and is yet to constitute a disciplinary to review his actions.
Wamakko’s suspension comes about two weeks after the party suspended Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. The party has since set up a disciplinary committee to review Amaechi’s alleged crimes.
