The president of the Campaign for Democracy (CD), Dr. Joe Okei Odumakin, has stated that community journalism will strengthen democracy and give grassroots people access to information.
Odumakin stated this recently at a lecture on the role of community journalism held in Calabar, Cross Rivers State.
According to her, community journalism served the same purpose as the mainstream one but could achieve a better result if well managed.
She said responsible journalism distinguishes between pseudo- democracy and the real one.
She urged publishers of community publications to make people their objective by publishing issues that politicians would like to sweep under the carpet.
Publisher of Cross River Watch, Mr. Agba Jalingo, said free and responsible press is what the nation needs to achieve socio-economic development.
This view was supported by another activist, Ms. Abiola Akiyode- Afolabi and the Akwa Ibom State, Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah.
