As the ongoing annual Osun Osogbo Festival reaches its peak this weekend, the Osun State Government has revealed that the President Goodluck Jonathan led Federal Government has not offered any support or made any financial commitment to the international celebration since it started last week.
Addressing a press conference yesterday in Osogbo, the Chairman of the state Tourism Board, Engr. Abimbola Daniyan, however maintained despite the Federal Government’s negligence, Osun as the custodian of the festivals, was committed to developing the numerous cultural festivals the state is blessed with.
While pointing out that global tourist traffic is gradually developing around the state owing to the major cultural festivals that the state prides in, Daniyan stressed that the ongoing Osun Osogbo Festival has helped Yoruba people around the globe to reconnect with the land of their origin.
Daniyan stated that the diverse and depth of the tourism potential of the state can be used to prime the state’s economic engine.
“The Osun economy can benefit greatly from the financial flows generated from tourism, its true wealth, only by organizing, developing and managing the sector to professionally acceptable standards, and by so doing, employment opportunities will be expanded across the board”, Daniyan added.
According to Daniyan, “Osun Osogbo Festival is now being embraced by an exciting spectrum of visitors from across society and classes, local and international, from high net worth international investors, culture enthusiasts, academic researchers, exchange students and local tourists”.
Daniyan then said that in the state government’s effort to develop tourism and culture especially during the 2013 ongoing Osun Osogbo celebration, it has provided free rail transportation for tourists coming to the state.
