However, if the recent report credited to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is anything to go by, then Nigerians would start having a rethink on their preference for the Toyota brand.
According to the FRSC Corps Marshall, Osita Chidoka, the Toyota brand, especially the Toyota Hiace bus has become the most dangerous brand on the Nigerian roads.
Chidoka in his report which contained results of the commission’s investigation between 2007 and 2012 revealed that there have been increased road crashes involving Toyota Hiace bus since 2007. Between that period, there have been 1,844 road crashes involving Toyota Hiace buses.
Out of this staggering number, 31 percent of such road accidents resulted in fire which also resulted in huge loss of human lives. It is also noteworthy to state that there has been an annual increase of 126 road crashes involving Toyota Hiace buses which was 48 percent of the total number of buses involved in road accidents.
In 2010 when the Toyota safety recall closed, the Toyota Hiace brand in Nigeria started getting involved in road accidents which always resulted in fire and of course in huge loss of human lives.
Chidoka has thus wrote a letter to the Managing Director of Toyota in Nigeria to bring this shocking revelation to the notice of the management for prompt action.
It would be recalled that Toyota Hiace YH3 buses were recalled in 1990 and recently in 2012.
