Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo, the state capital, southwest Nigeria, on Thursday sentenced two young men, Suraju Olarewaju and Lekan Olatayo to death by hanging for raping a 14 years old girl identified as Miss Bilikisu Adeyemi to death.
Justice Raheem Shiyanbola in his verdict convicted Olarewaju and Olatayo on two counts of conspiracy to rape and murder respectively.
The convicts were said to have committed the offence on 1st June, 2005 when they raped Bilikisu to death as they gagged her nose and
mouth with a loaf of bread while raping her at Abesu area of Osogbo.
The offence committed by the convicts was said to be in contrary to Section 324 and 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 34. Volume 2 Laws of Osun State, Nigeria, 2004.
According to the confessional statement of Lekan, one of the convicts, “at about 12 mid-night that fateful day, Bilikisu was having sexual intercourse with his boyfriend, Fatai, and we saw them.
“When Fatai finished with Bilikisu and left, Suraju and I then decided to do our own with Bilikisu. While we were making love with Bilikisu, it was Suraju that inserted bread into her mouth so as to prevent Bilikisu from making noise.”
Senior State Counsel from the state Ministry of Justice, Mrs Adekomi Folashade who led prosecution team argued that Suraju and Lekan were responsible for the death of Biklikisu but counsel to the convicts, Mr. F.N. Ukaegbu opposed the claim.
In his judgment, Justice Shiyanbola sentenced the two convicts to death by hanging.
