A hamstring injury has ruled Villarreal’s top scorer, Ikechukwu Uche, out of the Yellow Submarine’s visit to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu as they face Real Madrid on Saturday in a league fixture.
Uche requested to be substituted in the first half of their game with Osasuna on Monday after sustaining an injury in the encounter which ended 3-1 in their favour.
After an examination on Tuesday, Villarreal confirmed on their website that the Nigeria international had suffered a hamstring problem. They are yet to determine how long he will be on the treatment table.
Uche joined a list of top players that will miss out on the Real Madrid game. Tomas Pina, who earned his fifth yellow card on Monday, is out of the game, while recuperating Bruno Soriano is also a doubt. Cani is suffering from a knee problem, while Musacchio has yet to recover from a fever attack.
Villarreal coach Marcelino, however, believes Real Madrid are beatable despite his injury concern.
Marcelino told a post-match press conference, as reported by Football Espana, that he was content with having 40 points from 22 games, but was eager for more.
“It’s a nice figure at this point,” he said. “We’d have taken this in September but I think the play, teamwork, hard work and ability of this group means we could have had more.
“First we’ll enjoy this win and from Tuesday see what the week brings. Hopefully we have no mishaps.
“But the goal is to beat Real Madrid, and then the next opponent. If we win many more games we’ll finish high up the table.”
