The 10th Zenith Bank national female’s basketball league dunks off yesterday in Abuja amidst funfair with 16 teams split into two groups of eight teams jostling for honour.
Declaring the event open, Minister of Sports and Chairman National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr Tamuno Danagogo commended the sponsor, Zenith Bank for banking rolling the competition for 10 years and reassured government commitment toward encourage all sports in the country.
“I am particularly happy for what is happening here because sport is a key in transformation agenda of the government. I commend the corporate sponsor, Zenith Bank and the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for ensuring that female basketball is taking to the next level in Nigeria,” he said.
Speaking at the press conference earlier, NBBF president, Tijjani Umar, said the federation is trying its best to ensure that the league metamorphose into great outfit in justify the investment of the sponsor and the participating teams.
He said the Bank have also agreed to a new three year deal in the sponsorship valued of N90 million. “We are happy about this development; it is a good sign for our basketball. It used to be a yearly deal, but we are happy to have a three-year partnership with our sponsors -Zenith Bank. ‘The deal is N25 million for the first year, N30 million for second year and N35 million for the third year respectively.
“It is their 10th year of being with us, it is also a clear indication that they want to do more for our league,” he said.
The participating teams are First Deepwater of Lagos, who are defending champion, Dolphins, Elephant Girls, Sunshine, Custom, IGP Queens, Plateau Rock, Delta Force, GT 2000, Ahip Queens, Benue Queens, Immigration, Taraba Hurricane, Oluwole Babes, FCT Angels and Cool City of Enugu.
The winner will smile to bank with N1miilion, first and second runners up will take home N750, 000 and N500, 000 respectively.
