Residents Drag Woman To Police Station For Possessing Multiple Voter’s Cards In Osun

Some residents of Ibokun, headquarters of Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, southwest Nigeria on Friday, 6th June, 2014 apprehended a middle aged woman identified as Mrs. Gbadebo Alice for being in possession of multiple voter cards.

The housewife was dragged to Ibokun Police Division by the concerned residents after being caught with no fewer than 10 voter’s cards at A14, Odoolupo Street of the town.

The voter’s cards, according to the residents, belong to Unit 9, Isale Alfa, Ibokun. The cards bear different names and pictures.  

When asked on how she came about the voter’s cards by the residents, the woman could not provide convincing and clear information on the actual owners of the cards before they handed her over to the police.

Upon Mrs. Gbadebo’s arrest, political parties in the state have been raising alarm on the consequence the development may bring as the state prepares for its governorship election on August 9 this year.

Speaking on the incident, the chairman of the Ilesa North Campaign Committee of Governor Aregbesola who is also State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Wale Bolorunduro, described the action as criminal in nature and called on the security agents to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Osun State Governor, Mr. Abdulrasak Adeoye noted that the act was prohibited in accordance with the Electoral Law saying the act was also punishable under the law of the country.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs. Folasade Odoro confirmed the incident on behalf of the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Ibrahim Maishanu adding that the matter would be investigated by the police.

She explained that the police would not hesitate to arraign Mrs. Gbadebo if need be after the completion of investigation.
