Wole Oke Congratulates Aregbesola, Says Victory Is For Democracy

By Timothy Agbor, Osogbo

Governorship aspirant on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the just-concluded governorship election in Osun State, southwest Nigeria, Hon. Oluwole Oke, has congratulated Governor Rauf Aregbesola over his re-election in last Saturday’s voting exercise.

Oke, who was Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence in the House of Representatives, said this on Monday, 11th August, 2014 in a statement made available to journalists in Osogbo by the Director, Media and Publicity, Wole Oke Campaign Organisation (WOCO), Mr. Yemi Giwa.

The former lawmaker described the victory of Aregbesola at the poll as victory for democracy, saying that the people of Osun State have made their choice in a free, fair and credible election midwifed by President Goodluck Jonathan, who he stated was committed to providing a level-playing field irrespective of party affiliation.

Oke also congratulated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who was Aregbesola’s closest rival in the poll, saying that he gave a good account of himself as a dogged and committed democrat in the statewide exercise.

Speaking further, the former lawmaker particularly commended the noble role played by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Prof. Attahiru Jega and the nation’s security including the military in ensuring a hitch-free poll in the face of abuses and provocations from some quarters.

According to him, the INEC and security personnel have shown that they can be trusted in keeping pace in positive democratic development in Nigeria in fulfillment of the yearning and aspirations of well-meaning Nigerians,” just as he urged the INEC to continue to do their best in subsequent polls and the security to continue to exhibit high level of professionalism in future engagements.

Oke, while thanking the Osun people for the warm reception accorded his party, PDP, in nooks and crannies of the state throughout the electioneering period, also appreciated them for the maturity and the courage they displayed before, during and after election.

He said such character traits common with Osun indigenes had in no small measure contributed to the successful outcome of last Saturday’s election in the state.
