Speech delivered by Chairman of Conference 57, umrella organisation for Lagos council chairmen, Honourable Akeem Omoyele Sulaiman (Oris) at the group’s empowerment porgramme which took place at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere on Wednesday, 24th September, 2014.
In furtherance to the programme held on 1st August, 2014 where materials worth several hundred millions of naira were freely distributed to improve the economic status of indigent people living in our communities, the Conference 5, the umbrella organisation for Lagos Council Chairmen, having noticed the success of the programme, decided to organized this latest one, but this time doubling the number of materials that are to be giving out today.
We have been monitoring those who benefitted from the previous programme to know whether the materials have been used for the purpose they were meant for.
We are happy to inform you that the previous beneficiaries have made judicious use of the materials which has not only seen to improvement in their businesses but has also contributed immensely to economic improvement of the beneficiaries and those around them.
It is instructive to state that this programme is in fulfillment of one of the promises made to you to alleviate poverty in this state and indeed Nigeria.
You will agree with me, that sourcing for skilled Labour from lesser developed countries around Nigeria has shown that, giving the right support to our people will help to develop human capital, base on access to skills, resources and materials that will help to kick start small and medium scale business for the overall development of our society.
There is no gain saying the fact that poverty seems to have become a natural phenomenon in Nigeria.
Successive governments in Nigeria have been noted to have made efforts towards poverty alleviation yet no significant improvement seems to have been achieved.
We have given out several materials such as: refridgerators, deep freezers, out-board boat engines, generators, food stuffs such as rice and garri; pop-corn machine, mobile phones, spray painting machines, mechanic tool boxes, soft drinks, sewing machines, and hair dressing dryer machines, just to mention but a few as our contribution to alleviate poverty in this state.
It will interest you to note that our great party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) is focusing on meeting the basic requirements for a permanent reduction of poverty in Lagos State, through the provision of basic needs such as health service, education, quality water supply, food, housing, micro finance among others and as the leaders at the grassroots level, we will not relent in contributing our quota to the realisation of this laudable goal.
Finally, we enjoined all of you here present to see this measure as an oak seed means of empowerment, that we believe if properly nurtured will grow to become an oak tree.
Distinguish ladies and gentlemen, I thank you for listening and God bless.
HON. SULAIMON AKEEM (ORIS)CHAIRMAN, CONFERENCE 57, LAGOS STATE.
