The Council Manager of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Mr. Segun Ajayi, has charged the residents of the local government to embrace the usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, as the fuel of choice.
He made this known during his welcome address on the the occasion of the distribution of Eko Gas cylinders and accessories by the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources at the local government secretariat, Festac Town, Lagos.
Ajayi noted that LPG was introduced as the fuel of choice for Lagosians in order to reduce carbon emissions from the use of firewood and kerosene. He said that gas is cleaner, healthier, safer, more efficient and convenient to use for cooking.
“Certain health problems like conjunctivitis, bronchitis and even heart diseases are on the increase and it is being suspected that the use of kerosene, fire wood and charcoal are likely causes of some of these diseases because of the fumes inhaled when used for cooking,” he said.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Antonio Ayodele disclosed that the state government is determined to ensure that Lagos homes imbibe the use of LPG because of its health advantages.
Engr. Ayodele while stating further reiterated the importance of switching from kerosene, charcoal and firewood to LPG. He advised residents of Amuwo Odofin Local Government to shun the use of kerosene, according to him it was a health risk that could lead to respiratory problems and other health complications.
He further said that the Lagos state government has already started the construction of gas plant in some local government, which would make it easier to get refilled.
