The end seems near for two national newspapers in Nigeria with their billionaire publisher saying he is no more interested in funding the publications.
Jimoh Ibrahim, billionaire publisher of Daily Newswatch and National Mirror newspapers, has told the staff of the two newspapers that they should generate money to run them.
“I will henceforth stop funding these newspapers, I will even stop paying for the newsprint. Go and generate money to run these newspapers,” Ibrahim was as telling the staff of the two newspapers at a meeting he held with them at their Broad Street, Lagos office.
Reliable sources told thegazellenews.com that the billionaire businessman arrogantly told the staff that, “if you are tired of working, please lock the office doors and hand over the keys to me”.
It is indeed a grim development for the staff who are being owed salaries running into several months. Sources told thegazellenews.com that staff in the National Mirror newspapers are owed five months salary while their counterparts in Daily Newswatch and Newswatch magazine are owed seven months salary.
