School Bus Driver In Court For Killing OAU Law Student

The school bus driver, Rasaq Waheed who allegedly crushed a part 2 Law student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Miss Mary Ibitolu to death has been docked at a Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun state.

A charge sheet obtained by our correspondent in court after Waheed was brought for arraignment revealed that the incident happened on 16th May, 2015 along Osogbo Grammar School area.

The charge sheet stated that Waheed drove a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XB 113 SD on the high way in a dangerous manner before knocking Ibitolu off the motorcycle she boarded.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Fagboyinbo Abiodun told the court that Waheed hit two other people- Samuel Olasunmi and Abimbola Kazeem but they were lucky as they only sustained injuries.

The prosecution said the accused drove carelessly without regards to traffic rules adding that the bus lack efficient brake while the driver was driving without license.

Five count charges were slammed against Waheed.

Abiodun said the accused committed an offence contrary to Section 18, 7 and 25 of Road Traffic Act (RTA), Law of Osun state of Nigeria, 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the five count charges and his counsel, Mr. Bola Abimbola sought for his bail with assurance that Waheed would not abscond and would provide credible persons as sureties to stand his trial.

The presiding Magistrate Olusola Aluko granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties on the same sum.

Aluko ordered that the case file be forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The judge adjourned the case till 18th September, 2015 for mention.
