Barcelona romped to yet another victory by defeating Getafe 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Camp Nou.
Neymar had a brace, while Lionel Messi, Munir, Arda Turan and a Getafe own goal completed the rout for the Catalonians. With the win, Barcelona’s unbeaten run reached an astounding 37 matches.
Manager Luis Enrique made a few changes to his starting XI, namely giving Luis Suárez a rest in attack. In the Uruguayan’s stead was Munir, who lined up with Neymar and Lionel Messi. Sergi Roberto, Arda Turan and Andres Iniesta. In the back, Jeremy Mathieu started in place of the suspended Javier Mascherano, and joined Gerard Piqué at centre-back in front of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, while Aleix Vidal was at right back and Jordi Alba at left back.
Barcelona got a bit of good luck to open the scoring in the eight minute when an Alba cutback pass bounced off the leg of Getafe midfielder Juan Rodríguez, and just like that the hosts were up 1-0. Two minutes later it looked like they would double their lead after Emiliano Velázquez was whistled for a foul on Neymar in the area. But like so many times in recent years, inexplicably, Messi failed in his attempt to convert a penalty, as Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita made a superb save to deny La Pulga.
But Barcelona’s second goal wouldn’t take long and it was a thing of beauty. In the 20th minute Iniesta collected a ball at the top of the area and lofted a ball into Messi, who volleyed across to Munir and the 20-year-old headed it in past a helpless Guaita. From the time the ball left Iniesta’s boot, the ball never touched the ground until after hitting the back of the net.
One minute after Piqué hit the crossbar with a shot in the 31st minute, Neymar made it 3-0 when he gathered in a pass from Messi on the left and fired in past Guaita.
In the 39th minute the crossbar would once again deny Barcelona a goal as Alba’s volley off a Messi chip stung the woodwork and was eventually parried out of play by Guaita with Neymar lurking. Yet just like earlier in the half, seconds after striking the crossbar, Barcelona had the ball in the Getafe net and were ahead 4-0. This time it was Messi doing the damage, as he collected a pass from Turan, carved out enough space and rocketed in a left-footer that was impossible for Guaita to stop.
For the second time in the match, Messi connected with Neymar to manufacture a Barcelona goal, as the Argentine played a surgical ball into the Brazilian, who easily finished past Guaita to make it a 5-0 lead in the 51st minute.
The show continued into the 58th minute when Turan made it 6-0 with a spectacular goal via an overhead kick, after Piqué had done beautifully to control a ball, allowing the Turkey international to score.
At the other end, it was largely a quiet day for Bravo. Only a 70th minute shot from Moi Gómez from the left side that skipped just wide of the far post would pose any threat.
With the match long decided, the final 20 minutes played out at an easy pace, with Getafe trying to at least get on the scoreboard, while Barcelona enjoyed their football and played without any hurry to see things out.
Next up for Barcelona is a return to Champions League action on Wednesday against Arsenal at the Camp Nou.
