Lagos Lawmaker Urges Education District Heads On Need To Improve Teaching, Learning Of Yoruba Language

The Chairman of the Committee on Public Account (State) of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Moshood Oshun has charged all the Tutors-General and Permanent Secretaries in the six education dostricts in the state on the need to assist the Assembly in promoting Yoruba language teaching and learning in government schools across the state.

Hon. Oshun stated this when the PS/TGs appeared before members of the Committee on the consideration of the Year 2015 Audit report exercise.

According to the lawmaker, it becomes imperative for the education district heads to compliment the drive by the Lagos Assembly to promote the language for teaching and learning purposes, saying that this would further enrich the knowledge of the pupils and students since it would be much easier and richer to comprehend in one’s mother  tongue

The district heads who were cross examined by the Committee members on the Year2015 audit report however promised to discharge the task diligently, promising a better use of the language, not only for the preservation of the culture, but also to enrich teaching and learning process in government schools towards the attainment of best standards practice.

Hon. Oshun expressed that “most of the countries around the world that made it today did so because they maintain their native language and as such our own should not be different”.

“Most parents do not want to communicate with their wards in local language which is part of the problems the children are facing”.

Hon. Oshun thereafter concluded that the District Audit Officers should reconcile with their accounting books to ensure that they are up-to-date.
