In line with the August 12th scheduled date by the United Nations for International Youth day Celebration worldwide, the Ministry of Youth and Social Development has outlined a week-long robust programme for the year 2016 celebration of the day.
Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry, Pharm.(Mrs.) Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf while unfolding the details on “Ojutaiye”a talk programme on Radio Lagos said the 2016 World Youth Day celebration will see a return of engaging activities bearing in mind that “youth participation is crucial in a democracy which is why the programmes are youth centered and empowering” she said.
With the theme “Youth Leading Sustainability” the celebration which is to kick off on D-Day, Friday 12th of August 2016 would commence with a press briefing by the Honourable Commissioner followed by a parade of registered Uniformed Voluntary Organizations in Lagos State and rounded off with a special Jumat Service at the Alausa Mosque.
Volunteer community service will be the main feature of Saturday 13th which is day two and the youths are billed to converge at the local government nearest to where the event will hold in the five (5) divisions of the State.
Akinbile-Yussuf said a brand new Vehicle would be presented to the leadership of the State Chapter of the National Youth Council and Awards to some impactful partnering NGOs all of which will form day three alongside a Youth parliament Training session “this type of training is essential as a way of further entrenching a spirit of accountability, nationhood and patriotism which will in no small way secure the future for us all” she said.adding that the high point of the day would be a lecture to be presented by the Special Adviser on Education Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh on the theme of the International Youth Day.
Day four is dedicated to appreciating the contributions of the 2nd Youth parliament who would be presented with certificates and inauguration and sitting of the 3rd legislative assembly at the old House of Assembly Complex.
Likewise, the fifth day is scheduled for a Leadership Seminar themed “Youth Leading Sustainability” to serve as a sub theme for the Celebration theme: The road to 2030; Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”.
The Honourable Commissioner revealed that the robust week-long programme will be rounded off with a thanksgiving church service on Sunday 21st August at the Church of Christ the Light Chapel.
