Pastor Sam Adeyemi Says Sowore’s Rearrest ‘Saddening’

Popular Nigerian pastor, Sam Adeyemi, has added his voice to the condemnation trailing the forceful rearrest of activist Omoyele Sowore in a courtroom. The clergyman, who is senior pastor at Dayster Christian Centre, tweeted on Sunday that the video of the chaotic rearrest was “saddening”.

He said: “Watching the video of the re-arrest of Mr Sowore right inside a court of law is saddening. People expect their leaders to model the right behaviour. When those that should enforce the law break it, it weakens everyone’s resolve. We must do better to build our democracy o.”

A viral video had shown the activist being wrestled to the ground by a man in suit, who is believed to be a security agent.

However, the DSS denied his men invaded the court while alleging the commotion seen in the video was stage-managed by Sowore’s supporters.

Sowore was eventually detained following the botched courtroom arrest. His lawyer, Femi Falana said he elected to drive the activist to the DSS headquarters, after informing the operatives it was misnomer to effect his arrest inside a courtroom or within the precinct of the court.

Sowore and another, Olawale Bakare, were arrested for planning a protest which they dubbed #revolutionnow.
They had spent 124 days in detention, during which the court granted them bail twice, but the DSS refused to release them. It took the insistence of the trial judge before the court order was complied with.

Sowore would be rearrested the next day after his release.
