Former Spain number one, Iker Casillas, has quit his candidacy for the role of president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
Casilas, who was Spain World Cup-winning captain, announced his withdrawal in a statement stressing that the prevailing circumstances in the country are of much importance than the election.
It will be recalled that Spain is one of the countries in Europe seriously battling with coronavirus.
This makes the elections take a back seat,” the 39-year-old Casillas said on Twitter. “I think it is time to add and not divide, because football and society need it.”
The withdrawal of the former national team goal keeper means the incumbent president, Luis Rubiales, is set to be re-elected unopposed.
Casilas had previously stated that he wanted to raise the standards of the national federation as the reason he is contesting and he did not closed the door on a future presidential bid, saying he hopes to be part of the next electoral process
