Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-cultural group, has condemned the statement of President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, Mamman Daura, who sated that the 2023 presidency should not be zoned but given to a competent individual.
Gazelle.com reports that Daura while speaking with BBC Hausa service had stated that that competence should be placed ahead of zoning in the 2023 election.
Reacting, Afenifere stated that it is a must for the country to maintain the power rotation in the country. Afenifere’s spokesman, Joe Odumakin, state this while speaking with Daily Trust in a telephone interview stressing that the country must respect the zoning agreement.
Odumakin said: “They [northern candidates] would come out definitely, but it is now left for the country to say whether they want to accept the move or they should insist on the common understanding that power should rotate between north and south.
“I heard him [Mamman Daura] talking about competence or whatever. In 2023, he would understand if there is anything called competence. We are watching how things unfold.”
Odumakin also urged the south to be united so that the presidency can return to the region in 2023.
Also, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation in Nigeria has enjoined political parties in Nigeria to look in the way of the Igbos and give them a chance in 2023.
