The Nigeria Army says it is investigating the attack by Boko Haram fighters on Borno Governor, Babagana Zulum’s covoy during his visit to Baga area of the state.
The convoy came under a hail of bullets from the insurgents, after counter-insurgency forces assured the governor they had ridden the area of terrorists.
Prior to the attack, in which the governor luckily escaped unhurt, he had visited the Commander, 19 Brigade at the Nigerian Army Super Camp in Baga.
The army said details of the attack is “sketchy” and described the incident as an “isolated” one.
“Regrettably, this is an isolated and most unfortunate incident that occurred in a territory where normalcy has since been restored with socio-economic activities picking up”, said a statement from army spokesperson Sagir Musa, a colonel.
Meanwhile, Governor Bulum has said he might hire local hunters to secure the the state if the army proves ineffective.
