President of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, has resigned from office.
He announced his resignation in a televised address on Wednesday stating that he does not want blood to be spilled for him to stay in power, saying that he was also dissolving his cabinet.
“I want no blood to be spilled to keep me in power,” BBC quoted him as saying.
His resignation comes hours after he and Prime Minister Boubou Cissé were arrested and detained by the army.
On Tuesday, soldiers rounded up senior government and military officers in the towns of Mali as demonstrations demanding the resignation of Keita intensified.
