The South-East zone of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, former ministers, Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Amaechi, as well as other prominent Nigerians, to join it ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The call was made by the national vice chairman of the party (South-East), Chief Sir Arinze Ekelem, in a statement issued on Thursday, 3 April, 2025 in Awka, Anambra State.

According to Ekelem, the party offered a fresh political direction and was open to leaders committed to national development.
The SDP is a party that prioritises inclusivity. It is a platform for Nigerians seeking a new political path to rescue this country. Join the movement now for a greater and better Nigeria,” Ekelem said.

He also reaffirmed the zone’s full support for the party’s national chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam and the National Working Committee (NWC), commending their efforts in repositioning the party for future success.
Ekelem noted that the influx of high-profile defections to the party reflected growing confidence in its vision and leadership, especially as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
