The Executive Chairman of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji has challenged critics of the new tax law to provide evidence that low-income Nigerians are being burdened.
Speaking during a media parley organized by Arise TV to enlighten the public on the tax reforms, he said: “I challenge anyone to show me a single clause in the new tax laws that imposes more taxes on the poor. The fact is simple — the poor contribute very little to taxes worldwide, and Nigeria is no different.”

He explained that the new laws are designed to protect low-income earners and stimulate economic activity:
“These reforms provide significant reliefs for small business owners and minimum wage earners. We want to ensure that Nigerians at the grassroots have more disposable income to support their families and local businesses,” he stated.

The NRS Boss also addressed concerns about increased taxation on ordinary Nigerians:
“There is a lot of misinformation circulating, but let me be clear: essentials like food, transportation, and basic services are not taxed more than before. Our goal is to make the tax system fairer and more transparent, not to punish the poor.”
He concluded with a call for public trust and cooperation:
“We urge Nigerians to read the law and understand the provisions. Instead of fear-mongering, we want citizens to see the positive impact these reforms will have on everyday life.”
