Nigeria has lost one of its early television icons, as veteran actor and cleric Davis Offor, famously known as Clarus in the classic sitcom The New Masquerade, has died at the age of 85.
He reportedly passed away in Lagos on Tuesday, 7 April, 2026, after a prolonged illness, marking the end of an era for a generation that grew up watching one of Nigeria’s most influential comedy series.
Davis Offor became a household name in the 1980s through his role as Clarus, the witty and often comical houseboy whose interactions brought laughter to millions of Nigerian homes.
The New Masquerade stood as a cultural phenomenon during its time, shaping early Nigerian television and comedy. Offor’s performance was central to the show’s success, particularly his memorable on-screen chemistry with co-stars such as James Iroha, who played the flamboyant Giringory Akabogu, and Chika Okpala, known as Chief Zebrudaya.
The comedic exchanges between Clarus and Giringory became iconic, earning both actors enduring recognition long after the show left the airwaves.
After stepping away from acting, Offor devoted his later years to spiritual service.
He became a reverend and spent more than two decades in ministry, focusing on preaching and community guidance.

In his later years, Offor battled significant health challenges, including vision loss and prostate cancer. Despite these difficulties, he reportedly remained active in his religious calling and stayed connected with family and associates.
