The Lagos State House of Assembly has removed Mr Olalekan Onafeko as Clerk of the House with immediate effect and, simultaneously, approved a fresh round of key appointments aimed at strengthening the legislature’s administrative structure.

The decision was reached during plenary on Tuesday, 28 April, 2026 presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, where lawmakers adopted the resolution through a voice vote.

The House said the action followed deliberations on the position and was based on extant rules guiding tenure in the Assembly.

Consequently, Adenike Osinowo was appointed as the new Clerk with immediate assumption of duty.

Obasa explained that Onafeko’s tenure had elapsed, stressing that the decision was procedural rather than punitive.

“The tenure of the Clerk has run its course. This action is in line with the rules of the House and should not be seen as a disciplinary measure,” the Speaker said.

Onafeko had served as Clerk since January 14, 2022, overseeing legislative administration and coordinating the activities of the Assembly.

During the session, lawmakers acknowledged his service and contributions to the institution.

Obasa, meanwhile, commended the outgoing Clerk for his role during a period marked by key legislative engagements and internal institutional developments.

He also expressed confidence in Osinowo’s capacity to lead the administrative arm of the House, saying her experience would enhance legislative efficiency and strengthen internal operations.

In a related development, the Assembly confirmed Latifat Ogbara as Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission.

Lawmakers described her confirmation as deserved, citing what they called her competence, experience and track record in public service.

The House also confirmed Remi Bello as a member of the commission and charged him with supporting reforms within the legislative institution.

Members, thereafter, urged all newly appointed officials to uphold professionalism, transparency and dedication in the discharge of their responsibilities.
