Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL) now records over 42,000 passenger movements daily through an average of 1,000 bus trips across the state, the Lagos State Government has revealed.
The figure was unveiled during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking the third year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
In a statement issued Tuesday, 12 May, 2026 by the Director of Public Affairs, Bolanle Ogunlola, the government said the milestone reflected ongoing efforts to expand affordable and integrated transportation across Lagos.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the achievement underscored sustained investments targeted at modernising mobility across road, rail and water transport systems.
According to the report presented at the briefing, “Lagos Bus Services Limited moved a total of 60,882,000 passengers from May 2019 till February 2025.”
The report further indicated that the agency currently records “over 42,266 passengers daily with an average of 1,000 bus trips every day.”
Osiyemi noted that LBSL fares had remained comparatively lower than those charged by informal transport operators, thereby positioning the service as a key driver of affordable mobility in the state.
He added that the bus network now spans all five IBILE divisions and 13 Local Government Areas, including Ibeju-Lekki, Ojo and Ikorodu.
“LBSL currently maintains the widest public bus network coverage in Lagos State, operating across all five IBILE divisions and 13 Local Government Areas,” he said.
Furthermore, the report disclosed that the agency operates across 21 transport corridors and more than 40 bus service routes statewide, supported by six depots and a fleet of 300 buses.
Osiyemi stressed that the achievements aligned with the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to building an integrated, safe, affordable and efficient transportation system under the THEMES+ Agenda.
“The achievements reflect the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu administration towards building an integrated, safe, affordable and efficient transportation system for Lagosians in line with the THEMES+ Agenda,” he stated.
He further reaffirmed the government’s resolve to expand infrastructure across road, rail and water transport systems in order to improve connectivity across the state.
The Ministry of Transportation highlighted additional milestones recorded under the administration in rail development, traffic management and digital mobility systems.
The ministry disclosed that over 3.5 million passengers had used the Blue Rail Line, while operations on the Red Line Rail had been expanded with additional coaches to reduce waiting time for commuters.
Similarly, ongoing projects include the Blue Line Phase II extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, alongside junction improvement works at Toyin Street, Opebi Road, Allen Avenue and other strategic corridors.
In addition, the ministry said intelligent traffic management systems had been deployed in Ikeja, Lekki, Ikoyi, Surulere, Epe, Gbagada and Victoria Island to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.
On waterways transportation, the report stated that about two million passengers now use Lagos waterways monthly, driven by ferry expansion programmes, safety campaigns, life jacket distribution and the OMI-EKO electric ferry initiative.
Osiyemi maintained that the ministry remained focused on delivering a sustainable and technology-driven transportation system for residents.
“The Ministry remains committed to delivering a safe, integrated, affordable and sustainable transportation system in line with the THEMES+ Agenda,” he said.
He also disclosed that several projects had been lined up for 2026, including the Green and Purple Rail Line projects, the Lekki Water Taxi initiative, AI driver simulators and expanded smart mobility systems.
Earlier, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, said the state’s transportation reforms extended beyond rail infrastructure and conventional road transport.
“People who believe transportation is only about the Blue and Red Line Rail projects or NURTW activities would now better understand that transportation is much broader,” Omotoso said.
He added that the administration’s initiatives were designed to build a more connected, efficient and technology-driven mobility system across Lagos State.
