The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued the System Operator Licence to the Lagos Independent System Operator, marking a major milestone in implementing the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 and strengthening the foundation for a reliable, efficient and investor-friendly electricity market in the state.
The commission disclosed this in a statement on its official X handle on Thursday, 6 August, 2026 describing the licence as a significant step in deepening Lagos’s control over its power sector, following the law that empowered the state to establish and regulate its own electricity market independent of the national grid.
The licence formally authorises LAISO to function as system operator, responsible for coordinating and overseeing electricity transactions within the Lagos Electricity Market, a role central to ensuring stability, transparency and efficiency in power distribution and supply across the state.
LASERC said the development positions Lagos to attract further investment into its power sector and improve electricity access for residents and businesses.
The licence issuance comes as Lagos continues implementing reforms under its 2024 Electricity Law, which grants the state regulatory authority over generation, transmission and distribution within its jurisdiction, part of a broader push by subnational governments across Nigeria to take greater control of their electricity markets following constitutional amendments that decentralised power regulation.
