The Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation in Osun State, Hon Mayowa Adejoorin, has been arrested by the police, sparking condemnation from the Imole Campaign Council, which is driving Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election bid under the Accord Party.

The arrest occurred in Ilesa, with the police confirming the development on Thursday, 6 August,2026 amid the build-up to the August 15 governorship election.

The campaign council, popularly known as TICC, alleged that 62 party members are currently facing detention across various facilities nationwide. Spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi insisted the detentions would not prevent the defeat of the All Progressives Congress in the election, describing the manner of the commissioner’s arrest as deeply disturbing.

Olajengbesi likened the arrest to a bandit-style abduction carried out under the cover of police authority, expressing concern that the detentions may be linked to an attempt to create an environment conducive to electoral manipulation in Ijesaland ahead of the poll.

He claimed Adejoorin was targeted solely because he rebuffed overtures to defect to the APC, alleging the commissioner had been approached to support the party but refused before his arrest, a development he described as a serious allegation deserving immediate explanation.

Vowing strong political resistance, the TICC spokesperson declared that the APC chairman would not secure a single vote and predicted the APC governorship candidate would lose his polling unit.

He urged residents of Obokun to reject intimidation and abuse of power at the ballot box, maintaining that no citizen should be harassed over political affiliation, and demanded Adejoorin’s immediate and unconditional release, insisting there was no lawful basis for his continued detention.

Responding, the command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene upon receiving the report.

He explained that the area was cordoned off and several exhibits recovered, including expanded cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps.

Ojelabi confirmed that Adejoorin was arrested at the scene and taken to the command for questioning as part of the investigation process, noting that police were still gathering information on the incident.
