A Nigerian, identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service after officers foiled an alleged robbery attempt targeting banks in the Labone area of Accra.

Two other suspected robbers were shot dead during a gun battle with the Police, while another suspect reportedly escaped from the scene.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 13 August, 2026, after the Ghana Police Service received intelligence that a gang of robbers was preparing to attack the GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located at Labone

The Police said the intelligence was received at about 10:45am, prompting the immediate deployment of a team to the area.

According to the Police, officers arrived at Labone and spotted members of the suspected gang in vehicles parked close to the banks.

“Upon sighting the Police, one of the vehicle sped of in an attempt to escape,” the Ghana Police Service said in a statement.

The officers reportedly chased the vehicle and arrested Maazi, while the other occupant managed to escape.

The Police said suspects in a second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing at the officers.

“The robbers in the second vehicle also tried to escape amidst firing,” the statement said.

“The Police engaged them in a shoot out resulting in the death of two suspects,” the Service said.

Following the operation, the Police recovered two vehicles used by the armed gang.

A pistol was also recovered from the gang by the Police.

The arrested Nigerian suspect, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, is currently in police custody and is assisting investigators with inquiries into the alleged planned robbery.

The bodies of the two suspects killed during the shootout have been deposited at the morgue for further examination.
