The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University chapter (ASUU-LASU), has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike over the Federal Government’s continued failure to implement the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement.
The union announced the industrial action in a notice signed by the Secretary of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee, Comrade Thanny Nooem, PhD, and the Committee’s Coordinator, Comrade Oluwaseun Babalola, PhD, following a congress held on Tuesday, 15 September, 2026.
According to the notice, members at the congress unanimously resolved to commence the strike with immediate effect, citing the government’s prolonged failure to address the union’s longstanding agitation over the agreement’s implementation.
ASUU-LASU explained that the action had become necessary after several attempts to engage the government constructively yielded no concrete result, stressing that it had exhausted all peaceful options before resorting to industrial action.
“This unfortunate and avoidable action has become necessary due to the continued failure of the government to address the union’s longstanding agitation over the implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement,” the notice read.
It added that the union had waited patiently and made several attempts to engage the government in good faith, but that the prolonged delay and lack of concrete action left it with no option but to embark on the strike.
“The Union has waited patiently and made several attempts to constructively engage the government in good faith. However, the prolonged delay and lack of concrete action have left the Union with no option but to resort to industrial action,” the notice stated.
ASUU-LASU insisted that the strike would remain total, comprehensive and indefinite until all issues in dispute, including the signing, domestication and full implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement, were completely resolved.
“The strike shall be total, comprehensive and indefinite until all issues in dispute are completely resolved, including signing, domestication and implementation of the ASUU/FGN 2025 Agreement in full,” it added.
The union thereafter reaffirmed its resolve to sustain the struggle until its demands were met, closing the notice with its trademark solidarity slogan.
“Aluta continua, victoria ascerta,” the notice read.
