The Bauchi State Government has inaugurated a Technical Working Committee (TWC) on Headline Inflation to identify state-specific factors driving the rising cost of goods and services and develop practical measures to ease economic hardship on residents.

Inaugurated on Wednesday, 16 September, 2026, at the Conference Hall of the Bauchi State Bureau of Statistics, the committee has 30 days to conduct a comprehensive assessment of inflationary pressures in the state and submit a mitigation plan to the government.

The Secretary to the State Government(SSG), Hon. Aminu Hammayo, who represented Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, said the initiative was prompted by the growing hardship faced by residents and a communication from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) highlighting Bauchi’s persistent high inflation.

He said rising prices were affecting food, transportation, healthcare and household purchasing power, stressing that although monetary policies remained important, the state must tackle structural challenges in food distribution, market logistics and supply chains.

Hammayo charged the committee to produce evidence-based and actionable recommendations rather than academic rhetoric, noting that its terms of reference include developing short-, medium- and long-term interventions, with proposed budgets, responsible MDAs, implementation strategies and measurable performance indicators.

The committee is also expected to recommend immediate measures on unoccupied government housing, food-price instability, water and sanitation challenges and high transportation costs, while engaging the CBN for technical and policy support.

The Statistician General of the Bauchi State Bureau of Statistics and committee secretary, Dr. Salisu Ibrahim Waziri, said the assignment had been divided among five sub-committees covering housing, agriculture, transportation, water and sanitation.

He identified issues including more than 6,000 reportedly unoccupied government housing units, dependence on rain-fed agriculture, high farm-input costs, transport challenges, inadequate water infrastructure and weaknesses in waste management as areas requiring urgent attention.

He said the sub-committees would submit their findings within two weeks to guide the committee’s final report, implementation roadmap and budget estimates for government consideration.
