Lagos State University (LASU) has advanced 267 places in a single year on the global sustainability rankings, climbing to 493rd position worldwide in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings, while retaining its position as the Overall Best University in West Africa.
The result was announced at the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026 Results and Awards Ceremony in Baku, Azerbaijan, placing LASU 493rd globally among 2,016 institutions across 110 countries.
The university’s latest position marks a significant advancement from its 760th ranking in 2025, and represents a jump of 306 places from its 2024 position of 799th globally.
The feat extends LASU’s dominance in West Africa’s sustainability rankings, as the university has retained the No. 1 position in the region for the fifth consecutive ranking cycle since joining the UI GreenMetric ranking in 2022, covering 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
According to the university, the 2026 UI GreenMetric ranking assesses institutions on sustainability performance across key areas, including Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, Education, and Governance and Digitalisation.
LASU explained that its 2026 performance reflects its continuing institutional commitment to embedding sustainability, environmental responsibility and innovative practices across its operations.
Beyond the rankings achievement, the university disclosed that in August 2026, it received international recognition for its contribution to the UI GreenMetric network, with its National and Regional Coordinatorship renewed, alongside its elevation to Co-Chairmanship of key sessions at UI GreenMetric international events for the 2026/2027 academic session.
LASU described the latest achievement as a reflection of the collective efforts of the university management, staff, students and various units and committees contributing to its sustainability agenda, stating that it reinforces the institution’s growing profile in academic excellence, sustainable development, innovation, responsible governance and institutional transformation.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, congratulated the entire LASU community on the achievement, commending all those whose commitment and contributions continue to advance the university’s sustainability agenda.
The university stated that as it continues to build on the achievements of previous administrations, the latest UI GreenMetric result provides yet another indication of its steady progress and ambition to remain a leading institution in Africa and on the global higher education landscape.
