The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has told criminal elements to leave Abuja or abandon their unlawful activities, as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi, issued the warning in an Independence Day message to residents on Thursday, 1 October, 2026.

Sanusi said the Command would not allow the Territory to become a “lucrative playing field” for criminals seeking to exploit the festivities to commit crimes.

While felicitating with residents, he assured them of adequate security deployments across the FCT to protect lives and property and to ensure a peaceful celebration.

He said the Command had deployed personnel for strategic operations, visibility patrols and other proactive security measures to maintain law and order throughout the period.

The police boss also urged residents to use the anniversary to reflect on the values of unity, peace, patriotism, togetherness and collective responsibility.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Command repeated its warning to criminally minded persons to vacate the Territory or desist from unlawful activities.

Adeh said the Command remained resolute in identifying, arresting and bringing perpetrators of crime to justice.

According to her, the Commissioner also wished residents a peaceful, safe and memorable Independence celebration.

She added that residents who need help can reach the Command on its emergency lines. “Residents can reach the FCT Police Command on its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08028940883,” she said.
