The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) for killing a young girl and injuring another.
The culprit, Omotayo Olajide, was part of a team of Police operatives deployed to subdue rising tension in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle, where two rival youth groups, Nosamu boys and Alayabiagba boys, were daggers drawn over collection of toll.
The heat incidentally turned against the Police when, between the hour of 9:30 and 10:00pm on that fateful Thursday, November 5, 2026, ASP Omotayo Olajide, in an apparent over-zealousness, fired the shot that hit the two girls, killing Omole Taiwo, while the other victim is said to be recuperating in the hospital.
Confirming the incident, the command’s spokesperson (PPRO), SP Abimbola Adebisi, said in a statement issued on Saturday, November 7, that Police operation in the trouble area was to restore order, adding that the feuding groups were reportedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.
Unfortunately, according to the PPRO, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm, and the bullet struck the two girls.
She said both victims were rushed to the Ajeromi General Hospital for emergency treatment and, following the severity of the injury sustained by Taiwo, she was transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, where she was pronounced dead, adding that the second victim is currently hospitalised and is reported to be in stable condition.
The PPRO said the state Police command expressed deep sorrow over the loss of an innocent life and confirmed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), for a thorough and impartial inquiry.
She explained that the investigation is aimed at establishing the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary measures to be taken against the officer
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, has visited the bereaved family, to offer his condolences and assured them that justice would be served, while pledging that no officer found culpable would be shielded.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and protection of human life, the command urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest Police station or the command’s Public Relations Department.
