The Lagos State House of Assembly has constituted a six-man ad-hoc committee to investigate the N24 billion Light-Up Lagos Project initiated by the state government.
The committee was inaugurated on Monday, 10 February, 2025, following a resolution passed during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Ikeja, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
The members of the ad-hoc committee are: Hon. Abiodun Tobun, Hon. Lukmon Saad Olumoh (Chairman), Hon. Desmond Elliot, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Hon. Abiodun Orekoya, Hon. Femi Saheed, and Hon. Sabur Oluwa. The committee has been mandated to submit its findings within two weeks.
Speaking during the plenary, Speaker Meranda emphasized the importance of the project in enhancing security and improving the quality of life for Lagos residents.
“This project is critical to reducing insecurity across the state. Well-lit streets will help citizens identify their surroundings better and prevent criminal activities. It is imperative that we work collectively to ensure that every part of Lagos is illuminated,” she stated.
The Speaker also stressed the need for local government authorities to incorporate street lighting into all road construction projects to prevent unnecessary costs and disruptions in the future.
Furthermore, she advocated for local production of street lights and solar-powered lighting solutions to ensure sustainability.
“If we can produce transformers, then street lights and solar-powered street lighting should not be beyond our reach. It is time we begin to look inward and build the capacity to produce and install these systems locally,” she added.
Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh (APC-Ajeromi/Ifeolodun I), who moved the motion, urged the House to call on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to expedite action on awarding contracts for the Light-Up Lagos Project, as captured in the 2025 budget.
The ad-hoc committee has been tasked with assessing the project’s progress, financial implications, and implementation challenges, after which it will submit a comprehensive report to the House.
The Lagos State House of Assembly remains committed to transparency, accountability, and ensuring that government projects serve the best interests of the people of Lagos.
