An eleven-year-old Zimbabwean girl has claimed she jumped on the back of a crocodile and gouged its eyes as the reptile tried to eat up her friend close to their home in the northern part of the country.
The Sunday times reports that Rebecca Munkombwe heard screams from a stream around their home and rushed down to find her friend, nine-year-old Latoya Muwani, struggling to stay afloat as a crocodile lashed its jaws around the girl.
According to Munkombwe, she jumped on to the creature and dug her fingers deep into its eyes. Immediately, the crocodile loosened its grip on Latoya and swam away allowing Rebecca and some other girls at the stream to help her to shore.
She said, “We had just left the water when we heard Latoya, who was left alone swimming near the deep zone, screaming that something was biting her.
“I jumped on top of the crocodile and started beating it with my hands before using my fingers to poke its eyes until it released her. Once she was free, I swam with her to the bank where the other children pulled her out of the water.”
Latoya was admitted to nearby St Patrick’s Hospital.
Expectedly, Latoya’s father, Mr Fortune Muwani, described his daughter’s survival as “miraculous”.
He explained that he was at work when he learnt his daughter had been attacked by a crocodile but thought the worst before he learnt she had survived.
Mumani said, “I was at work when I learnt that my daughter had been attacked by a crocodile while swimming.
“For a moment there I thought of the worst before I learnt that she had survived after being saved by Rebecca. How she managed to do that I don’t know but am grateful to God. Latoya is recovering well here at St Patrick’s and we expect her to be discharged soon as her injuries are not serious.”
