Six persons were on Thursday, 17th July, 2014 shot to death by heavily-armed robbers who invaded a branch of Wema Bank Plc at Modakeke, headquarters of Ife East Area Office in Osun State robbing it of yet to be ascertained amount of money.
When contacted, the Police Public Relation Officer for Osun State Police Command, Mrs. Folashade Odoro confirmed that six persons including three customers of the bank were shot dead by the armed robbers during the robbery operation.
A resident of the town who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that lifeless bodies of the deceased were taken to the palace of the tradition ruler of the town, Oba Francis Ogunsua Adedoyin as the ancient town was soaked with pandemonium over the robbery incident.
The police officers and men who were said to have besieged the bank few minutes after the armed robbers raided it could not arrest any of the gunmen as they all escaped.
Despite the timely arrival of Soldiers in the Swift Action Squad (SAS) formed by the state government, the mobile policemen from Osun Police Command as well as the armed squad of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the dare-devil men of the underworld escaped with their loots as they killed residents that were running for safety.
As the operation lasted, other banks in the community hurriedly discharged their customers and closed down for fear of being attacked by the armed robbers.
According to the PPRO, the Police officers chased the armed robbers to the outskirt of the town before they escaped. She said “men of the Nigeria Police Force are still in search of the robbers.”
