The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed as spurious the allegation that former Governor Kayode Fayemi donated N1.5b to the Buhari Campaign Organization, saying such wicked allegation is the handiwork of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government in Ekiti State.
A statement by the APC state Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, said some officials of the PDP-led administration in Ekiti State have been identified as masterminds of the obnoxious and malicious SMS being syndicated on the Internet and the state news media alleging that the former governor made the donation.
He said the promoters of the hate propaganda, who were desperate to discredit the former governor as well as the presidential candidate of the APC, alleged that the donation was purportedly made via a Barclay’s Bank, Accra cheque.
“The spurious allegation, which started as a syndicated SMS by PDP officials, was later broadcast on the state radio and television under the supervision of state officials,” Olatubosun said, stressing that the former governor who is currently a director in the APC presidential campaign organisation, never gave any donation to the campaign.
He added that the allegation was merely a panicky response by the PDP administration to the growing popularity of Buhari across the nation as well as the imminent change through the February 14 poll.
“This latest attempt to tarnish the good image of Dr Fayemi through this wicked and senseless allegation has failed just like other plots being hatched by the PDP in the build-up to the general elections” he said, adding that Ekiti people are better informed about the fraudulent activities of the PDP leadership and its penchant for mischief.
“Dr Fayemi stands out around the world as impeccable in all his dealings. He never donated any money to the campaign, neither did he lobby before he was appointed to organise APC convention. He did not lobby before he was considered to be vice presidential candidate of APC. He has never been associated with fraud.
“Fayemi is not integrity-challenged like Fayose whose entire being is denominated in naira and kobo. Up till now, he is still in court over alleged N1.3 billion poultry project fraud. He can’t explain the whereabouts of the N22 billion refund and N2 billion the Federal Government paid into the coffers of Ekiti State government. Now he is playing N1.5 billion donation card in order to divert people’s attention from this wicked fraudulent behaviour against Ekiti people,” he said.
“It is important to place it on record that Dr Fayemi does not have any account with any Barclay Bank in any part of the world, hence the issue of the donation does not arise,” the APC spokesman said, adding that “the masterminds of this wicked lie in their desperation failed to take cognizance of the fact that no bank in Ghana (in line with the country’s law) can effect the transfer of N1.5billion (equivalent of $10million) under any condition”.
Olatubosun regretted that Ekiti State that used to be known as the Land of Honour is now being turned into a reference point for anything and everything that is ignoble and debasing by these desperadoes.
“That an individual or group of individuals would wake up one day, conspire and fabricate a lie against a fellow citizen and caused it to be spread through the state radio with active connivance of state officials just to impress their paymasters is simply irresponsible and should be condemned by all well-imeaning citizens of the state,” Olatunbosun said, stressing that it is on record that Fayemi administered the state meritoriously for four years and took it to envious heights without blemish in terms of tangible development and excellent public image.
“No amount of mudslinging and hate campaign by the PDP government could rob him of his well earned place in the hearts of the people and in the history of the state. We challenge Fayose to produce evidence of that payment while we call on journalists to investigate this matter for the world to know the truth,” he said.
