There was fresh tension in Bayelsa State on Wednesday as some loyalists of former Governor Timipre Sylva mounted the flag of the All Progressives Congress and unveiled the proposed secretariat of the party in the state.
The proposed APC secretariat building, which is owned by the former Special Adviser under the Sylva administration,Chief Richard Kpodo, was a subject of controversy as it had been marked for demolition by the state government.
The building had also served as office complex for the privately-owned transport company known as Perry Rich and owned by Kpodo.
The hoisting of the APC flag, it was learnt, was done at the early hours of Wednesday and the sign post mounted few hours later about 12noon.
The mounting of the flag and the signboard however attracted a lot of attention among the residents.
It was observed that many politicians, within and outside government, came to take a look and drove away in their vehicles.
One of such politicians said the opening of the party office was a welcome development and the expectation that they would be welcomed with violence should be dismissed.
“We are not like them.It is not our style to use bombs or unnecessary attacks against opposition,” he said.
Some of the defunct ACN and ANPP components of the APC in the state described the unveiling and hoisting of the party flag as lacking proper advice and not to the knowledge of the interim leadership of the party.
On Tuesday, APC Interim National Officer, Mr. Ebikibina Miriki, said the composition of the state executive committee of the party and the inauguration of the party in the state was not in line with the directive of the Interim National Executive and that the Interim National Leader, South-South,Chief Tom Ikimi was expected to inaugurate the new exco.
He said the opening of the secretariat without proper process showed the true intention of those involved.
Kpodo, who claimed to have been nominated as the Interim Chairman of the APC in the state, said the hoisting of the party flag and the unveiling of the party secretariat was an indication of the seriousness of the party to take over the state.
“We have started with the unveiling of our proposed secretariat and will officially open it soon,” he said.
