Osun State governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola on Friday, 2nd May, 2014 advised Nigerian students to direct large part of their energies and time in the pursuit of their studies and other activities that would add value to their lives.
Governor Aregbesola who gave this charge this while presenting eighteen seater buses to Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Osun State College of Education, Ilesa; Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun; Osun State Polytechnic, Iree; and the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke; stressed the need for students to be serious with their academic pursuits rather than running after frivolities.
Charging the student leaders to always bear in mind that their present positions as students’ union leaders are meant to prepare them for leadership of the country, the Governor said pursuing value added activities will place them at vantage positions of becoming worthy leaders the nation longs for.
His words: “as leaders of tomorrow, always demand for those things that will add value to your life which you lack at present not demeaning things.
“I urge you to be true to your commitments in life, don’t be overjoyed or exhorbitant so that your education won’t suffer in any way”.
He further advised the students’ leaders to take a cue from his adherent to traffic rules saying: “I don’t exceed 60km/hr while travelling intra state and 100km/hr on inter state travelling. As leaders we look forward to in this nation, always drive according to traffic rules.”
Governor Aregbesola thereafter charged the students’ leaders to use the vehicles judiciously as they will assist them to graduate to a level where the country will stand to benefit from their wealth of experiences and sacrifices.
In her opening remark, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Aregbesola on Tertiary Education, Alhaja Mulikat Bello, said the thrust of education policy of the present administration in the state is aimed at promoting education system that could produce complete men and women who will contribute positively to the transformation of the state in no distant future.
Alhaja Bello applauded the state Governor for implementing a downward reduction of fees payable at all the state owned tertiary institutions in 2011.
She also commended the Governor for reviewing upward amount payable as bursary to students’ of the state origin across the country together and sending 98 medical students from the Osun State University to Ukraine for the completion of their studies.
She however promised that National Association of Nigerian Student (NANS) and the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS) will receive their buses next week.
In his vote of thanks, President of the Osun State axis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr. Samuel Awowole, appreciated Governor Aregbesola for being a listening governor who rose to ameliorate their plights when they cried to him.
They thereafter called on the Federal Government to ensure the immediate rescue of the over 200 girls abducted by Boko Haram at Chibok about two weeks ago and urged Mr. Governor to extend this gesture to other tertiary institutions in the state.
