The Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), Magodo has commenced one of its flagship programmes specially organised for clerical officers that have stagnated but still considered useful to render quality service in the Unified Local Government Service in Lagos State.
The Director General of PSSDC, Mrs. Olubunmi Fabamwo noted that the Centre is partnering with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in Learning and Development has consistently redesigned modules to improve administrative competencies of participants, the course is being moderated by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
According to Mrs. Fabamwo, the course is bound to totally transform participants after going through a well-developed programme which will prepare them for higher challenges.
She stated that “effective service delivery by the staff of local government is a yard-stick for measuring the performance of government, as such its staff must possess the right knowledge, skills and attitude to enable the delivery of essential social services to the people.”
“Successive government had continuously been developing local government staff for the fulfilment of the mandate of good service delivery. The present administration’s policy of inclusive governance through the creation of streamlined public service and the implementation of service-wide people oriented management policies across all tiers of the service lend credence to the importance of the third tier of government,” the Director General emphasised.
The nine-month course will lead to a Certificate in Local Government Administration and confers the opportunity to seek admission into diploma course in Local Government Administration at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
The 104 participants were carefully selected after going through a qualifying examinations out of 200 candidates who applied from 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Area.
The Use of English, Accounts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Law and others are among subjects carefully designed to enhance career development of participants, as well as a course in Leadership training which will take place at the Sea School in Apapa and a 4-week attachment programme in a local government other than the one they are currently serving.
Chairman, Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Babatunde Rotinwa who declared the course open noted that the course made possible by the state government has continued to place premium on local government administration.
He urged participants to make embrace the opportunities offered by the course to advance their career, adding that PSSDC has always rendered good consultancy services in Human Resource (HR) development, while he advised local government and local council development areas to continue to sponsor officers to the course in order to enhance good service delivery.
