Seventeen lawmakers of the Edo State House of Assembly, which includes 14 members whose seats were previously declared vacant, disclosed that they have impeached the Speaker of the House, Francis Okiye, and his deputy, Roland Asoro.
This decision was taken on Thursday at a private location in Benin City, the state capital, few hours after security officials took over the State Assembly Complex.
According to the lawmakers, the new lawmakers to replace the impeached speaker and his deputy are: Victor Edoror, who represents Esan Central Constituency, and Emmanuel Agbaje, who is representing Akoko-Edo Constituency II as Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively.
The Edo State House of Assembly has been enmeshed in crisis since 2019 and the upcoming gubernatorial election in the state has not helped matters.
