Ekiti Assembly Directs EKSIEC To Conduct Referendum On New Councils

Ekiti State House of Assembly has directed the state Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) to conduct a referendum on the creation of
18 additional councils in the state.

The House at its plenary in Ado Ekiti also committed the bill on the creation of 18 local councils to its adhoc committee for further
legislative action.

The moves were consequent upon the motion by the House Majority Leader, Hon Churchill Adedipe which was seconded by Hon Ogundele Folorunso.

Hon Adedipe explained that the motion was aimed at ensuring proper creation of the proposed councils in the state.

In his remarks, Hon Ajibola Samuel representing Ekiti East Constituency II raised a point of Order, saying the House should stop further action on the bill.

He cited Order 54 Section 5 of the House Standing Order which forbids the House from discussing issues already before a law court to
buttress his point.

The House Deputy Speaker, Hon Orisalade Adetunji and Hon Ayodeji Odu however raised objection to the Order, pointing out that the House was unaware of any case on the issue.

The Speaker, Dr Adewale Omirin agreed with the submissions of the two lawmakers and the motion was unanimously approved by members of the House.
