President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to review a plan nationwide security exercise by the Nigerian Army, named ‘Operation Positive Identification’. The exercise is rumoured to begin November 1.
Representative Ndudi Elumelu, the Leader of Opposition in the House of Representatives, describe the plan as imposition of emergency on the countryand likely to violate citizens’ fundamental human rights.
Instead, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, leader urges “the army and all security forces” (to) “develop more pro-people strategies in combating our security challenges instead of a measure that could further victimise the people”.
He advised the army ‘to concentrate on its constitutional role of defending the territorial integrity of the country and allow the police and other relevant agencies such as Nigerian Immigration Services to handle regulatory issues relating to internal security’.
