A call has gone to all well-meaning Nigerians not to wave off the alleged death threat on the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a whiff of political propaganda but instead come together to condemn plan of such dastardly act by some mindless Nigerians as an evil wind that would blow no one any good.
A statement by the Action Group of the APC in Ekiti State hinted the fact that someone of Tinubu’s political personality could cry out about the perceived threats to his life is a mark of dangerous desperation on the part of the ruling party and a sign of the ominous dark cloud hanging over the fate of opposition in the coming March 28 and April 11 elections.
In a release signed by its spokesperson, Segun Dipe, the group therefore urged all Nigerians, notwithstanding their ethnic, religious and political leaning, to put President Goodluck Jonathan on actual notice of the possibility of the dangerous occurrence and that he would be personally held responsible should anything untoward happen to the man who he, the president, has seen as standing between him and his vaulting ambition to continue in power beyond 2015.
“From what our group had gathered, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Jonathan Presidency so much appreciate the democratic premium in Tinubu and wanted to fracture the APC by offering him the position of vice President in an interim government if he would agree to part company with the popular Gen Mohammadu Buhari. Once Tinubu rebuffed the offer to participate in the interim scheme, the presidency allegedly decided to change tactics, not to entice Tinubu any longer but silence and if necessary neutralise him.
“Nothing should be put beyond the People’s Democratic Party and the president’s goons in their bid to ensure that they continue in the reign of seething corruption and other numerous impunities. We must all rally together in the condemnation and fight against their evil plan and ensure that it is nipped in the bud, to avoid an attendant colossal negative reprisal.
“We all know Nigeria of today as a country where impunity thrives. No student of history would have forgotten in a hurry how life was snuffed out of Basorun MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, which was widely acclaimed as the freest and fairest ever, and how the then government of the day went away with the impunity. This might be a source of inspiration to the potential masterminds who may now wish to try it on Asiwaju Tinubu. But our advice to those cooking such evil soup is that the pot would turn and the soup would pour on them and they will get burnt by it,” the statement said.
Segun Dipe also recalled how the presidential candidate of the APC, General Mohammed Buhari, escaped a well-orchestrated murder attempt even long before he was emerged through the party primaries and pleaded with all citizens who are mindful of the future of the country not to treat the alarm with kid gloves but let their voices be heard among those who would not take it lightly should such untoward fate befall Tinubu, God forbid.
“Let every well-meaning Nigerian put Jonathan on actual notice, and let him read ours as an express notice that Tinubu must not die. No, he must not. Nigeria is too fragile to be able to withstand the magnitude of attendant calamity that will befall it, should such is ever attempted,” he said.
Describing Tinubu as a political iconoclast, who should not become a political martyr as a result of his unyielding political activities that have put the bums of the ruling PDP and President Jonathan on a hot burner, Action Group is of the view that it would be fraudulent and malicious to regard Tinubu’s refulgent democratic and people-oriented profile as sectional or anti-government. And anyone who keeps quiet on hearing the threat to his life is either a coward or a traitor.
“Tinubu’s passion to see democracy -one with a human face- enthroned in the country did not just start with the present PDP-led government and he remains the foremost consistent progressive alive in Nigeria today. Not once has he fought dictatorship to a standstill. He is therefore not known for crying wolf where there is none. In the wildest days of the late dictator, Gen Sani Abacha his voice was even more critical and he fought even more gallantly. Yet not a strand of hair was removed from him,” the statement noted.
Rather than regard Tinubu as an enemy who they must get rid of, the present government should learn from his rare position as one of the warriors and champions of constitutionalism, respect for human rights and enthronement of the genuine process of fair play and social justice, which eventually led, in 1999, to the birth of the Fourth Republic that they are currently benefiting from.
“His unblinking political opponents should be his best attorneys, when passing judgement on his credentials as one of the foremost, consistent democrats of this Republic. They should admit that it was in recognition of his consistency and a sense of public service -two qualities that he imbibed from his mentor, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo- that Tinubu has continued to be the person around whom progressivism has revolved and to kill such a person is to put the entire nation on precipice. God forbid.
“Our group therefore calls on the powers that be to tighten to provide adequate security around Tinubu and ensure that no evil happens to him before, during and after the election, which they are fast conceding to the political fire power of the opposition APC, where Asiwaju Tinubu holds sway as a selfless leader,” the statement concluded.
