The Lagos Safety Commission has narrated how the Management of Shoprite Ltd, Ikeja City Mall flouted the safety regulations of the state yet restricted seal order by the commission.
The commission also warned members of the public against consuming the products on the meat and dairy shelves of Shoprite which it noted is unsuitable for consumption because of poor handling by the management.
The Director, Research and Development (DRD) of LSSC, Mrs. Ronke Odeneye who, on Friday, 27th November, 2015, led a safety audit and inspection team to the facility made it known that the inspection tour became necessary because the commission had received comments, complaints from members of the public as well as various improvement order/abatement notices served the facility which were left unattended to by management of the facility.
Mrs. Odeneye stated further that the commission has been carrying out safety audits in all food merchants, processing and manufacturing facilities across the state among which were the Shoprite and the Ikeja Shopping Mall as a whole.
She stated that the management of Shoprite displayed and exhibited lack of respect for extant regulations and safety laws of the state by putting up a subtle resistance to a seal order issued by the Lagos State Safety Commission.
The seal order was given on grounds of serious safety violations on food safety and other safety health infractions, poor non-existing emergency preparedness measures and poor sensitivity amongst other issues that had been highlighted during previous safety inspections to the facility by the commission..
“The Health Safety and Environment Officer/ Executive Director, Shoprite Retail Supermarket Nigeria Limited, Adeola Kagho and members of her team visibly worried about the prohibition (seal) order issued to the mall exhibit lack of respect for cinstituted authority and went on about their business with impunity and arrogance, stating that, they are a multi-national company and therefore, cannot be subjected to food safety regulation and standards, hence, they will not complyto the prohibition (seal) order.
“Though the Branch Manager of the Ikeja City Mall, Mr. Linus Augustine-Eshiet, signed the safety prohibition (seal) order issued by the commission, cooperation was lacking on the side of the management of Shoprite as regards proper sealing of the facility.
“Members of the public are hereby advised to desist from patronizing Shoprite meat and dairy shelf as the products on the shelves of this company are not suitable for consumption now due to poor and improper handling,” Mrs. Odeneye said..
